We all know the expression about dangling a carrot in front of someone. But what if this entire case of wine is ‘carrots’ so to speak? We’re talking about Ulithorne after all, a star-studded McLaren Vale producer. All you can really do is dangle an even bigger carrot. So that’s what we did. You’ll get 11 bottles of their Familia shiraz, probably enough reason in itself to grab a case. But why stop there? We’ve added the ultimate carrot, a bottle of their Paternus shiraz, which is nothing short of a showstopper. All carrots, no sticks...that’s how we roll.

Ulithorne Paternus Shiraz 2018 - 1 bottle

Each case contains the following:

McLaren Vale, SA

96pts Sam Kim | 95pts Wine Pilot | 94pts James Halliday | 5 Stars Sam Kim | 5 Red Star Halliday Rated Producer | Single Vineyard | Old Vines

From the oldest vines on Ulithorne’s estate vineyard comes this dark and deep Vale shiraz. Great drainage in the sand-over-clay soil sets the stage for excellent concentration of flavour, presenting as blackberry, cherry, plum and spice. Twenty months in a mix of new and seasoned French oak rounds out the package with fine-grained tannins and a subtle cedary influence on the back palate. This is classic Vale old vine shiraz, inky and smooth, deep and complex.

Ulithorne Familia Shiraz 2021 - 11 bottles

McLaren Vale, SA

95pts Sam Kim | 94pts Wine Pilot | 5 Stars Sam Kim | 5 Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

McLaren Vale shiraz, yes, but lithe and vibrant. A more medium-bodied feel leaves room for the lively fruit flavours to sing, unshackled from big, beefy, old-school styles. Classic brambly goodness skates on a fresh sheet of acidity, with just enough grippy tannin to keep it grounded. Miraculously food-friendly, there’s all the ingredients here for an infamous dinner party red. The kind you and your mates are liable to enjoy a wee bit too much of in an evening.

The previous two vintages of this garnered a more-than-respectable 95 points from Mr. Halliday himself. We got in quick with this year’s, but expect similar accolades to be awarded soon enough.
