Shiraz 2017

Great Southern, Western Australia

5 star Halliday rated winery

Introducing the great all-rounder: Mt Barker shiraz. The region’s producing some bloody delicious stuff these days, and this is one of them.

It’s great for those hankering for versatility. Mt Barker isn’t as cool as the Yarra Valley, nor as hot as the Barossa. You get loads of lovely, ripe, juicy berries, with a touch of brambly spiciness and some well-placed oak. It’ll go with all kinds of foods and drink beautifully on its own too. A slightly lighter body means you won’t tire of drinking it, and it’ll still be delicious when the mercury’s sky-high. Chill it down for a halfa in the fridge, even! And naturally, being shiraz, it won’t shy away from your richer, wintry fare either.

YOU’D PAY $31.50 full price.

Shiraz 2017

Clare Valley, South Australia

5 star Halliday rated winery

Clare Valley shiraz is in a class of its own. It benefits from the ballsy, rich-fruited, adrenaline-pumping charms of South Australia, but retains a bright flash of refreshing acidity thanks to the higher altitude. The resultant wine is fruit-forward and plush, but lighter and brighter and full of herbaceous crunch. There’s something for everyone, then, and a full spectrum of flavour. From tangy blueberries and softly scented raspberries, to summery black cherry and juicy plums. It’s tied together by a gentle peppering of tannin and a gentle kiss of oak.

YOU’D PAY $30.00 full price.

Cabernet Shiraz 2017

King Valley, Victoria

5 star Halliday rated winery

There’s no wine more Aussie than a shiraz cabernet, or in this case, a cabernet shiraz. We like the grapes plenty on their own, it stands to reason a blend would suit us just fine too. Happily, they work together beautifully here. A gorgeously deep and crunchy cabernet scaffolding is filled out by some pleasingly fruited shiraz, giving some of the easiest-drinking juice around. Smooth as silk and enjoyable as a sunset, there’s no need to cellar it. Just enjoy in the here and now.

YOU’D PAY $27.00 full price.

Shiraz Grenache 2017

McLaren Vale, South Australia

Ok, mofos, I’m not going mad. First thing I smelt here was olives. Not literal olives, naturally. We’re talking tasting notes here. Alongside that savoury deliciousness sit some rather beautiful berries. Give it a swirl and their perfume is delightfully evident. A handful of strawberries, couple of blueberries, a dribble of plums, and a faint dusting of clove on the finish. It’s the kind of wine that brings people together round the dinner table. It’s honest, dependable and delicious.

YOU’D PAY $25.00 full price.

Grenache Blend 2017

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Gold - concours des grands vins du Languedoc-Roussillon 2018 | Gold - concours national des vins IGP 2018 | Gold - concours Gilbert et Gaillard 2018 | Gold - sélection 70 millions de dégustateurs 2018

When a producer as prolific as this (Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2015 International Wine Challenge) does ‘entry level’, you know it won’t be run-of-the-mill. So they’ve selected some merlot, cabernet, carignan and grenache, given it a tickle of carbonic maceration (Beaujolais-style), and you end up with a wine that expresses all the blueberry and melted chocolate of the Languedoc, along with the strawberry-and-spice slipperiness of the winemaking techniques. It’s harmonious but still powerful - loads of aromatics and spice, and loads to like. Three gold medals (so far) don’t say otherwise.

YOU’D PAY $22.00 full price.

ONE of the following wines:

Shiraz 2018

McLaren Vale, South Australia

8/10 Halliday vintage rating | 5 red star Halliday rated winery

This is from a winery we’ve loved for the longest time. So, naturally, we were optimistic when we heard the new vintage was ready. ‘17 and ‘18 have been a ripper one-two combo of incredible vintages, and this delivers an uppercut of sumptuous flavour right in the feels. Kickass cherries and luscious berries are enhanced by lashings of dark chocolate and a spicy oaky backbone. A thunderous crackle of tannin is there to remind you that this is incredible Vale shiraz you’re drinking.

YOU’D PAY $30.00 full price.

AND ONE MYSTERY SHIRAZ/ SHIRAZ BLEND...

$76 RRP for this wine is based on average individual RRPs of the mystery wines on offer.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
