Ever since learning to pronounce Wairarapa (let’s be honest, I still can’t), we’ve loved the pinot from Matahiwi. This one keeps the streak alive, offering a fragrant cherry core that seem to be unparalleled in pure intensity amongst Aussie pinots. I’d chalk this up to terroir, but also the clones used that we don’t often see in such prolific combination over here: things like the ever-so-fragrant, blue-fruited 777 clone; the elusive, swashbuckling Abel clone (someone apparently snuck a cutting into the country in their boot), plus some of the more prolific Dijon clones. Accordingly, you may want to smuggle some of this contraband-worthy pinot into your cart.
