The Lucky Dip Case is back! With a Shiraz Editon!

The first time we did this case, we broke the internet. This time we’ve bubble-wrapped the servers because they’re in for another beating.

Every case contains the same eleven wicked wines, including some of our absolute faves here at the ‘fo. More info on them below, and they’re all good things. All mofo standard - i.e. nothing we haven’t enjoyed ourselves.

Then there’s the added excitement of seeing which one of these world-beater wines you will receive as your twelfth.

The twelfth wine is the wildcard and could be any one of these:

An iconic Penfolds Grange 2017 worth $1000 (1 in 100 chance)
Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Shiraz 2018 worth  $150 (1 in 25 chance)
Archery Road Longbow Shiraz 2018 worth $80 (1 in 10 chance)
Sieger Estate Frederick BLK 777 Shiraz 2017 worth $50 (at a minimum!)

Each box contains one of these epic wines. The odds vary per wine, but each one is a centrepiece wine, worthy of some truly special occasions.

We should say up front: there are no returns on this - click here for case terms and conditions. As it’s a Lucky Dip, it would be unfair to other mofos running in the draw.

The easiest way to guarantee to get a bottle of Grange is to go out and buy one for yourself. If you, like me, don’t have $1000 handy, this is definitely your best (and cheapest) option! Heard enough already? Pop that case in the cart and cross your fingers and toes! Otherwise, read on for a bit more info on all those lovely wines:

The Wild Card Wines

Wild Card Wine #1

Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2017

Barossa Valley, SA

98pts Wine Spectator | 98pts Huon Hooke | 96pts Robert Parker

Very deep, dark, dense colour with plenty of purple in the rim. The bouquet is classic Grange, loaded with toast-smoky-oaky scents of smoked-meats and toasted barrels, dried herbs adding an extra fragrance, and hints of five-spice, especially star anise. It’s very full-bodied and concentrate, powerful and long-lasting, but the tannins are beautifully crafted and supple, harmonious, and avoid any suggestion of astringency. The core of the wine is lusciously fruit-sweet and delicious, the robe of tannin complementary rather than domineering. The finish is tremendously long and satisfying. I can enjoy drinking this now: not usual with a new Grange release. A quite magnificent wine and a great Grange. - Huon Hooke

Strongly marked - as always - by its 100% American oak elevage, the 2017 Grange backs up the cedar and vanilla notes with ample blackberry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, ripe and almost decadently creamy in the mouth, it’s loaded with substance, concentrated and rich, yet- in the context of Grange - relatively light and elegant-seeming on the finish. Only the seventh-ever Grange to be exclusively Shiraz, it originates from Barossa Valley (86%) and McLaren Vale (14%): Shiraz from the other growing regions in South Australia failed to make the grade this year. - Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Memorable, complex, aromatic and explosively deep, with a mix of palo santo, dark chocolate, black olive, espresso and hazelnut butter. The pure fruit at the core is a mix of ripe huckleberry, boysenberry and wild blackberry, with dense but polished tannins. Savory notes of dried rosemary and sage, cigar box, dried apricot and sandalwood linger on the epic finish. Drink now through 2045.“ - Wine Spectator

Wild Card Wine #2

Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Shiraz 2018

Barossa Valley, SA

96pts Wine Orbit | 4.5 Vivino (All vintages) | Five Stars Wine Orbit | Old Vine

It’s always exciting to come across a wine with such presence in the glass. This has a powerful black fruit core that really ties the wine together, making it full and complete. The aromatic power of the wine walks the walk when it comes to the palate - glossy and full and rich. The fruit profile swarms the mouth; brambly, briary, bunchy. That freshness and focus of the fruit is followed by spice, coffee, and toffee nuance. This is immense in every sense of the word.

Wild Card Wine #3

Archery Road Longbow Shiraz 2018

Barossa Valley, SA

96pts Wine Orbit | Five Stars Wine Orbit

From the prized southern part of the sun-drenched Barossa, steeped in quality grown shiraz (you know we’ve done the research) It’s right here, where the surrounding views offer the picture-perfect painting; a diversity of colours from the tree leaves to the soils, which in turn give our favourite grape - shiraz - all the lashings of character we as adults have grown to become obsessed with. A blend of hand-selected low-yielding parcels, you’ll find generous flavours of black fruit, olive and pepper spice, backed by silky tannins, yet the wine is intense on the palate, with a great depth and length. Such a complex finish, and a damn fine gem of a shiraz.

Wild Card Wine #4

Sieger Estate Frederick BLK 777 Shiraz 2017

Barossa Valley, SA

94pts Wine Orbit | New to the ‘Fo

From the fertile plains of Barossa’s rich valley floor comes a grape of great fame. It’s illustrious deep colour could mesmerise any punter, and it’s aromas are sure to enchant even those who try to abstain it. It’s the star of the show: shiraz. Taking no prisoners on its mission to be the biggest and the best- there’s chocolate interlaced with stewed plums and a hint of dried figs. A dance of redcurrant across the mid palate dares to drive freshness home for the long, slow burning finish. Both the beauty and the beast in the glass, you’ll be enchanted all the way through.

The Others

Amelia Park Ironstone Shiraz 2022

2 bottles

Frankland River, WA

Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery | Mofo Fave

This wine is, without doubt, one of the most popular we’ve ever seen at Vinomofo. How popular is popular, you ask? Well, thirsty mofos took over 30,000 bottles of a previous vintage straight out of our hands. Yup. We know it’s a great wine deal but when our mofo members are this unanimous in their desire for this drop; well it’s simply cause for one big shiraz gluggin’ celebration.

Full bodied and silky smooth with lashings of plums and earthy spice; if you’re quaffing this Frankland River gem on a week night, know you’re in good company alongside many a mofo. With one fist in the air (and the other holding a glass of this wine) we salute you!

When looking at a deal at this price, the question could be raised “yes that’s a great deal but what about the quality?” Well, we love it but don’t take our word for it. With strong reviews and the consistency CW Wines is known for, be assured you’ll be just as happy with the quality as you are with the price. Wonderfully ripe and inviting, the perfumed bouquet shows dark fruit intensity combined with violet, vanillin oak, cocoa and subtle spice notes, leading to a concentrated palate that’s opulent and persistent. B Minor Heathcote Shiraz 2021

2 bottles

Heathcote, VIC

Over in Heathcote, it’s no secret that shiraz champions the vine. B Minor don’t just know this, they do everything they can to accelerate this excellence in every drop. With access to the best fruit grown on incredibly ancient Cambrian soils, the depth and plushness imparted are enough to make you salivate.  B Minor is quite rich initially but backs the intensity up with a bright and drinkable berry freshness - all the while holding to an earthiness. You’ll be cracking a second bottle before you know it.

Viveur LiCo Shiraz 2021

2 bottles

Limestone Coast, SA

96pts Wine Pilot | Boutique Producer

A friendly drink, and like a good mate it’s not only good company, but has layers. Subtle spices, and a savoury complexity from the winemaker’s magic touch. Single vineyard, basket pressed, quality French oak... but all that magic aside, its medium bodied fruit shows blackberry, plums and red cherries peppered with a touch of regional hillside spice. Perfect with a simple cheese and salami platter! Good company and good spice. Just nice.
