Pre-arrival Offer
We expect this wine to be ready to dispatch March 29. Place your order as normal and we’ll dispatch it to you as soon as it arrives.
The Lucky Dip Case is back! Last time we did this, we broke the internet. This time we’ve bubble-wrapped the servers because they’re in for another beating.
Every case contains the same 11 wicked wines, including some our absolute faves here at the ‘fo. More info on them below, and they’re all good things. All mofo standard - i.e. nothing we haven’t enjoyed ourselves.
Then there’s the added excitement of seeing which one of these world-beater wines you will receive as your twelfth.
The twelfth wine is the wildcard and could be one any one of these:
An iconic Penfolds Grange 2017 worth $950 (1 in 100 chance)
A 96pt Barossa Valley shiraz worth $100 (1 in 25 chance)
A single vineyard Clare Valley shiraz worth $65 (1 in 10 chance)
A 95pt McLaren Vale shiraz worth $45
Each box contains one of these epic wines. The odds vary per wine, but each one is a centrepiece wine, worthy of some truly special occasions.
We should say up front: there are no returns on this - click here for case terms and conditions. As it’s a Lucky Dip, it would be unfair to other mofos running in the draw.
The easiest way to guarantee getting a bottle of Grange is to go out and buy one for yourself. If you, like me, don’t have $900 handy, this is definitely your best (and cheapest) option! Heard enough already? Pop that case in the cart and cross your fingers and toes! Otherwise, read on for a bit more info on all those lovely wines:
The Wild Card Wines
Wild Card Wine #1
Penfolds Grange Shiraz 2017
South Australia
Very deep, dark, dense colour with plenty of purple in the rim. The bouquet is classic Grange, loaded with toast-smoky-oaky scents of smoked-meats and toasted barrels, dried herbs adding an extra fragrance, and hints of five-spice, especially star anise. It’s very full-bodied and concentrate, powerful and long-lasting, but the tannins are beautifully crafted and supple, harmonious, and avoid any suggestion of astringency. The core of the wine is lusciously fruit-sweet and delicious, the robe of tannin complementary rather than domineering. The finish is tremendously long and satisfying. I can enjoy drinking this now: not usual with a new Grange release. A quite magnificent wine and a great Grange. - Huon Hooke
Strongly marked - as always - by its 100% American oak elevage, the 2017 Grange backs up the cedar and vanilla notes with ample blackberry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, ripe and almost decadently creamy in the mouth, it’s loaded with substance, concentrated and rich, yet- in the context of Grange - relatively light and elegant-seeming on the finish. Only the seventh-ever Grange to be exclusively Shiraz, it originates from Barossa Valley (86%) and McLaren Vale (14%): Shiraz from the other growing regions in South Australia failed to make the grade this year. - Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Memorable, complex, aromatic and explosively deep, with a mix of palo santo, dark chocolate, black olive, espresso and hazelnut butter. The pure fruit at the core is a mix of ripe huckleberry, boysenberry and wild blackberry, with dense but polished tannins. Savory notes of dried rosemary and sage, cigar box, dried apricot and sandalwood linger on the epic finish. Drink now through 2045.“ - Wine Spectator

Wild Card Wine #2
Schubert Estate Lone Goose Shiraz 2016
Barossa Valley, SA
96pts James Halliday | 96pts Sam Kim | 96pts Wine Pilot | 5 Stars Sam Kim
Schubert Estate brings the single block greatness with the brightness dialed up a notch thanks to a touch of viognier in its Lone Goose shiraz. It’s the northern Rhône recipe for greatness, realised much closer to home in Australia’s top shiraz region. Every aspect of the crafting is hands-on, from the harvest to the wild yeast fermentation, on through the basket pressing. Only then can this delicious drop get a rest, seeing 20 months in older French oak. The nose is a touch floral (thanks to the viognier), but that deep shiraz fruit powers through, accompanied by herbal and leather notes, along with chocolate and licorice. What happens when the darkness of Barossa shiraz sees the light? You’ll have to pull the cork to find out.

Wild Card Wine #3
Kilikanoon Ridgeline Shiraz 2019
Clare Valley, SA
5 Red Star Halliday Rated Winery | Single Vineyard | Vegan Friendly
Kilikanoon...one of the Clare’s absolute best and one of our absolute faves. Ridgeline isn’t just a marketing term for this shiraz. The grapes are sourced from a few rows at the very top of the hill on their Morrison’s Vineyard, overlooking the town of Watervale. There’s a smidge of new oak used here, but the majority is older barrels to the tune of 15 months. This provides a bit of texture and structure while still letting that fruit sing. We found dark cherry, plum, dried herbs and licorice all wrapped up in a savoury blanket with a lengthy finish and ripe tannins. Another hit from a producer that seems to know no other way.

Wild Card Wine #4
Haselgrove Il Padrone Shiraz 2019
McLaren Vale, SA
95pt Wine Estate | 95pt Wine Showcase | 95pt Sam Kim | 5 Stars Sam Kim
Lovers of classic Vale shiraz will adore this one from Haselgrove! It’s big (but not ponderous), rich, round and offers loads of deep, inky goodness to get lost in. There’s plush, chewy berries with hints of peppery spice and leather that float intriguingly across the palate. Plums, blueberries and juicy black cherries dominate the fruit spectrum, in that inimitable Vale dark coffee-cake profile. It’ll get even more interesting in a few years’ time, but I, for one, won’t be able to keep my hands off it.

The Other Wines
Gapsted Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 - 2 bottles
King Valley, VIC
Another fantastic release from one of our favourite producers at Gapsted. They consistently produce epic drops that our mofos LOVE. Everything is in balance, with fruit in the blackberry and plum spectrum, underlying spice and earthiness, a bit of drying tannin. One of those ‘don’t overthink it’ kinda wines, straight up tasty, enjoyable and ready to roll.

Cimicky Piping Shrike GSM 2018 - 2 bottle
South Australia
Cimicky has been at it in the Barossa for 179 years. That’s not a typo. Since German settlers moved onto the property in 1842, it has only been in the hands of two families. This is their Piping Shrike GSM, a wine sitting between medium and full-bodied with a silky palate and notes of raspberry, rose petal and spice. This is made in a drink-now style, bursting with bright fruit, so no need to pack this away for a later date.

Reschke Reserve Pinot Gris 2021 - 2 bottles
Limestone Coast, SA
The Limestone coast region is famous for reds, but if this pinot gris from Reschke is any indication, it’s also a ripper region for aromatic whites. This is beautifully perfumed, gorgeously lifted and wonderfully fruity. A cool, elegant acidity drives the experience with poise and grace. The finish is long and lingering. It’s miraculous wine for your money, and we think you’ll agree.

Sophie Schaal Chardonnay 2021 - 2 bottles
South Africa
Women in Wine
Roll out the red carpet! This wine is from one half of the winemaking team from Julien Schaal - the one and only Ms Sophie Schaal. It’s the first release under her eponymous label, and with experience across Burgundy and South Africa, you’d be right to expect a very smart chardonnay from Sophie. The wine is full and smooth, bursting with melon and citrus, dancing alongside mineral notes and soft acidity. This is a cracking chardy at an amazing price and we are as excited about the wine as we are to work with Sophie’s range into the future.
