Have you heard the one about the Aussie winery that goes to the states to make a zin? The wine turned out amazing… so there wasn’t much to joke about.
Paso Robles is mostly cabernet country, but they do a mean zinfandel when they turn their hands to it. This one has all the heady American opulence you could want, while also being quite restrained. It’s chock-full of stewed plums, bursting with juicy flavour. There’s a kick of aniseed to counterbalance, and it’s all framed by gossamer tannin that don’t spoil the fun. Lightly toasted French and American oak barrels have been used for maturation, giving a lick of vanillin brightness. It’s balanced and extremely plush, without feeling fatty.
It’s definitely a cut above in terms of quality. Zinfandel sometimes gets a bad rep for glorified fruit juice. Nobody could say that of this. It’s a style and calibre apart from the masses, and shows what good zin should be.
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down
